Solitude Park is set to twist and shout on Friday 28 August when the Classic Beatles take to the stage at 7.30pm with a musical tribute to the famous Fab Four.  The band will be bringing the unmistakable sound of the Merseybeat to Banbridge with a free concert featuring classics covering the complete Beatles catalogue, from the early mop top era of I Wanna Hold Your Hand and She Loves You through the psychedelic period of Sgt Pepper right up to the final curtain call of Let it Be .

Have you ever wondered about the past? How did people live their lives 2,000 years ago? What were their homes like? How did they dress? All will be revealed this weekend when you have the opportunity to experience life as a Celt first-hand at Navan Centre and Fort from 11am to 5pm, Saturday 29th August at their Celtic Family Event.

Rock Detective Club, Marble Arch Caves, Enniskillen, Co. Fermanagh, August 26th. An exciting expedition for 4-12 year-olds, who can take part in a treasure hunt or try their hand at orienteering, whilst finding out about the array of plants, many of which have existed for millions of years.

Excitement is soaring for the first ever display of professional kite-flying to take place in Dungannon.  Kites of all shapes, sizes, characters and colours, will take to the skies above Dungannon Park in a precision flying event, where professional pilots will showcase their skills in flying kites into stack formations and other intricate manoeuvres.  The kites are the main attraction at the free ‘Picnic in the Park’ on Bank Holiday Monday 31st August.

Derry/Londonderry/Legenderry

It’s a case of lights, eels and lots of action this bank holiday weekend at Lough Neagh.  Lumarina will light up Ballyronan Marina Friday 28th August from 7.00pm while the River to Lough Festival will celebrate the world renowned Eel Fishery in Toome Saturday 29th August.  Lighting up the marina at Ballyronan, join your family and friends at this illuminated spectacular with a fireworks finale on the lough.  Entry is only £3 per person and you can either enjoy live music from 7.00pm or if you’re feeling energetic you can go zorbing, paintballing, take a trip on Segway and for the really adventurous or ultra fit who are up for some daredevil action there’s an assault course!  There’ll be an array of street food and craft to choose from and amusements will entertain the little ones before fire dances, Irish, jive and hip hop dancing will liven up the lough side before the light show and fireworks bring Lumarina to a close.  All activities and amusements are free upon entry.

The Willis Clan is a family band of twelve brothers and sisters from Nashville, TN – Music City USA, where they perform regularly on The Grand Ole Opry.  They have Irish roots and started out in Irish music and dance placing in the top 5 at the World Championships of Irish Dance in 2013 and winning the Fleadh Cheoil in 2012.  Now they perform many genres of music such as bluegrass, country, pop, in addition to Irish.  They were contestants on Season 9 of ‘America’s Got Talent’ making it to the live rounds and getting to perform at Radio City Music Hall in New York City. Join staff at the Marble Arch Caves on Sunday 7th June, in a hunt for unseen wildlife in the Marble Arch National Nature Reserve. Hunt in habitats throughout the Nature Reserve, catch and identify invertebrates as you go! Why not learn a bit more about these mini-beasts fascinating lifestyles and their roles in an ecosystem.  This event is suitable for people of all ages but all children must be accompanied by an adult. Please bring warm waterproof clothing and suitable footwear. This event is FREE of charge. Book for one of the hour long slots. ‘The Trouble with Giants’, at the Roe Valley Arts Centre Limavady this Saturday 6th June, is a brand new show for children, which brings to life the story of mythical giant Finn MacCool through music and storytelling.  The familiar story of how the Giant’s Causeway came to be is told from some new perspectives including a magpie, a fish and a frog. Each character and action, such as the fight between the giants, is represented by music.  Characters include Finn MacCool, his clever wife Oonagh and arch-enemy Scottish Giant Benandonner.  Suitable for ages 4-11, families welcome.  All children must be accompanied by an adult over 18.

There is a packed festival programme this June to celebrate the Larne Area’s Maritime Heritage at this year’s Larne Maritime Festival, and also the visit of the Tall ships to Northern Ireland this July.  The festival opens on Saturday 6th June when Larne Main Street will be awash with all manners of strange sea creatures, sailors and of course pirates! The festival continues until 20th June with events for all the family to enjoy.

Belfast

The smell of the smoke and steam, the sound of the whistle….step back in time on a journey of nostalgia between Belfast Central and Dublin on Sunday 7th June.  At the head of your train will be a steam locomotive that was built especially for the Belfast-Dublin-Cork railway line, in 1932.  Your seats will be in lovingly restored carriages, a train from the 1960’s and 1970’s, complete with fully operational bar and tea-bar.  All of that, and 4 hours to enjoy Dublin before your return journey home.  The train departs from Belfast Central at 0915, Lisburn at 0943 and Portadown at 1009.  Tickets must be purchased in advance, either online at www.steamtrainsireland.com and 02890246609.

North Down Model Railway Society are on track for their biggest ever exhibition taking place on 11th-12th April at Bangor Grammar School.  The North Down Model Railway Society will mark their 25th Annual Model Exhibition by treating visitors to their largest ever model-making showcase. From miniature railways and steam engines to marvellous moving Meccano models and remote control airplanes, the two-day event promises to bring together the very best displays from model making enthusiasts across the UK and Ireland.

Brian Boru was the first High King of Ireland and you can meet Fiachra the File, who was Brian Boru’s personal story collector at the Market Place Theatre this Saturday afternoon. He will tell you the heroic tales of the first High King of Ireland with help from his friend Brian O Brien and Ken Kennedy. A fun family puppet show where kids can learn through an entertaining show created by Honest Arts.

Under the direction of Siobhan O’Brien, Borderline Players are back! Jack, a young boy from a poor family, exchanges the family cow for some magic beans. The beans grow overnight into a huge beanstalk, which Jack climbs into the clouds, arriving at a magical land ruled over by a cruel giant. The North West’s largest celebration of Irish musical culture, Derry Feis Dhoire Cholmcille, continues all week until Friday 10th April at the Millennium Forum.  The Feis will celebrate Irish language, verse and drama as well as the famous Irish Dancing Competition and vocal choirs.

Round off the Easter holidays and work off all that chocolate by getting close to nature at Portmore Lough Aghalee this Saturday 11th April on a fun treasure trail!  Children will have the chance to explore the reserve and collect objects along the way to use in nature-themed crafts. See Willie Russell’s classic play Blood Brothers this Friday 20th March at the Ardhowen Theatre Enniskillen. Set in Liverpool, Blood Brothers tells the story of fraternal twins, born into a large and poor working class family who were separated at birth because their mother decided to have one of them adopted. The twins’ different backgrounds take them to opposite ends of the social spectrum, one becoming an Oxbridge-graduated councillor and the other unemployed and in prison.  The play looks at the differences and conflicts of their upbringing, their relationships with one and other and with their real and adopted mothers as well as with the girl they both ultimately fall in love with.

Sounds for Heaney, a three date tour from 20th-23rd March will arrive at the Derry Central Library on Saturday 21st March.  This is an exploration into Seamus Heaney’s poetry and using it as a direct source of creative inspiration for writing and creating music. The outcome is a blend of Heaney’s voice with sounds and music that are purely inspired by his voice, poetry and his country. The written music and selected poems are all compiled by drummer and composer James Anderson and aimed at celebrating the life and passing of Heaney himself.

This movie tells a moving story based on real life events that continues to happen in society, and asks the questions why this happens but also hopes to make the audience understand what part they can play in helping to combat this. Proceeds in aid of Suicide Awareness.

The River to Lough Festival is a new and innovative one-day festival that will take place at the Toome Eel Fishery on Saturday 27th September 2014 from 12 noon to 6pm. The festival will celebrate over 8,000 years of fishing on the River Bann and Lough Neagh. It will highlight the rich cultural heritage associated with this very ancient fishing tradition as well as the mythic transatlantic journey of the eel. It will also celebrate the uniqueness of other wild food that comes from the River Bann & Lough Neagh, and will encourage local, national and international visitors to appreciate the culinary uniqueness of the Lough Neagh Eel as well as other local artisan produce.

Join the WWT to celebrate World Wetlands Day on the 1st and 2nd February, an international celebration of wetlands. Meet amphibians and insects, take part in wetland themed activities.  Drop in and take part in a fun introduction into what wetlands do for us followed by a whirlwind tour of the wetlands at Castle Espie running at 12pm and 2pm each day.

Join in the celebrations for Burns Night at The Burnavon Theatre Cookstown on Friday 31st January.  Compere for the evening, the BBC’s ‘A Kist o’ Words’ presenter Wilson Burgess, will introduce dance and musical performances, recitals and yarns.  Then to top it off dance leaders Ken and Linda McLean will invite you on to the floor for a lively ceilidh to music provided by Risin’ Stour.

Burns Night Supper on Saturday 1st February at 7.30pm in the Westville Hotel. Music on the night is by Ben Sands of  Sands Family Band from Rostrevor and dinner will include Haggis and all the trimmings!

Recreate a Van Gogh picture – starry night or sunflowers at the Market Place Theatre this Saturday. Using the quick wet felting technique of joining fibres with just soap, bubble wrap and circular movements, children will have fun building up the layers of wool fibres to recreate a masterpiece but this time in felt! Wrestling Superstars are taking a break from their tours of America, Europe, Japan & Mexico to take part in a giant one-off extravaganza in County Tyrone. The Craic Theatre is the venue for this year’s must-see event where fans will have the chance to witness the passion of dedicated athletes perfecting their craft. Wrestling Superstars will collide in a clash of skill and will in the ring that will grip the audience’s attention like nothing you will have seen before. The spectacular event will take place on November 10th with doors opening at 7.30pm.  Spectators will get the chance to get up close and personal with their favourite stars. This is a great chance to have a great night out with friends and family at an affordable price. In recent year’s stars such as Wade Barrett, Drew McIntyre, Mason Ryan and of course Ireland’s own Sheamus have appeared in similar venues throughout the country. On Saturday 10th November Killymurris Church Hall Glarryford are hosting a funday for all the family. There will be demonstrations and stalls including Atlantic crafts NI, Peekaboo Boutique, Gloonan Gallery, Colemans Garden Centre, Black Bow Bears and many many more. Their charity for the day is Belfast Central Mission who will get a presentation of the food given by children and a cheque presented to them on the day too to help with their fabulous work.
