Strabane’s Big Weekend returns with Summer Jamm from Friday 14th – Sunday 16th June.  The town centre will come alive with live music, dance, street entertainment, arts & crafts, and ‘Strajamba’ Music Festival with headline act Nathan Carter.

Summer Jamm in Strabane kicks off on Friday night with DJ Jamie B & support in Ruby’s Nightclub.  Saturday is full of family fun from 1pm – 5pm as Encore PAA will be opening the event with a showcase extravaganza.  This will be followed with live music throughout the town from Folk N Trad Mad, Mad Notions, Strabane Brass Band and Trad for Youth. To celebrate Youth 19, local singers will be performing in the busking tent including Juno Hassan, Jamie Donnelly, Darci Wilders to name but a few.   

Families will enjoy an array of street theatre, flash mobs, games, funfair, face painting, Jungle Pets, and a host of activities for the whole family to enjoy.  Plus a range of products and food will be available from a selection of stalls from Strabane Market.

North West Regional College (educational partners of Summer Jamm) are back with their National Award Winning Careers Team.  Join them at a ‘Careers Roadshow’ –which will encourage people to indulge in some beauty treatments, health checks, have a go at gardening and learn more about computer coding!

Closing Saturdays afternoon activities will be Class Act Choir with a performance that you don’t want to miss.

The entertainment continues from 5pm as ‘Strajamba’ live music festival is back in Canal Basin for another year of great music.  Headlining the big stage will be country sensation Nathan Carter, supported by some amazing local acts.  Make a night of it with food, licenced bar and VIP Tent. On until 11pm, the atmosphere is sure to be electric with the best of local artists and the best of Country music.

Country music continues on Sunday with a FREE family concert.  This years ‘Country Fest’ in Canal Basin will welcome back the superb Johnny Brady, David James and a host of local musicians! Join in the fun with plenty of activities including circus workshops, arts & crafts and face painting! Love dancing? Then join with the jiving and line dancing happening throughout the afternoon. Grab a bite to eat at a choice of food stalls and relax and enjoy the sun in the licenced bar area.

Summer Jamm in Strabane is organised by Derry City and Strabane District Council and supported by Strabane Business Improvement District (BIDS), North West Regional College and Youth 19.

TAKE A JOURNEY OF VOYAGE AND DISCOVERY WITH THE LYRIC

Lyric Theatre, Belfast has announced their Autumn/Winter 2019 season programme. Themed Voyage and Discovery the programmefeatures the best of world-class theatre and new writings which explores the idea of place and a sense of discovery – whether it be within your ‘self’ or discovery of the world at large.

The season opens with Willy Russell’s heart-warming comedy Shirley Valentine (31 Aug -5 Oct) directed by Patrick J O’Reilly and starring Tara Lynne O’Neill fresh from her appearance in the award winning Derry Girls.  Described as “the funniest and most heart-warming play,” follow Shirley as she takes a voyage of self- discovery to Greece.  October welcomes The Playboy of the Western World   (8 Oct-2 Nov) a co-production with Dublin Theatre Festival directed by Oonagh Murphy, about life on the margins and the lengths we go to, to create a reality more exciting than the place we find ourselves.  Both productions will also tourto venues across Ireland, including the Millennium Forum; The Market Place Theatre, Armagh; The Gaiety, Dublin.

In association with Edinburgh’s Traverse, the Lyric presents Meghan Tyler’s extraordinary play, Crocodile Fever (03-08 Sep), a darkly comic and surreal tale of sisters taking on the dark forces around their farm to the soundtrack of 80s pop. Crocodile Fever was developed as part of the Lyric’s highly successful New Playwright’s Programme.  The programme is now in its third year with a vibrant new team of young writers. Be the first to see their writing in progress with the New Playwrights Showcase (31 Oct-02 Nov).

The Lyric is also delighted that their new writing entry into A Play for Ireland, an initiative of Dublin’s Fishamble Theatre Company, has been chosen to be produced. The Alternative, by Michael Patrick and Oisín Kearney, is a rich black comedy that imagines an alternative history of Ireland. It will tour around five theatres throughout Ireland before coming back home to the Lyric in the Autumn (08-13 Oct).

This Christmas you can enjoy the spirit of adventure and discover two wonderful new productions.  Peter Pan (29 Nov-04 Jan) which follows the young Darling family help free Neverland in Paul Boyd’s new family musical.  Meanwhile adult audiences will enjoy Grimes and McKee’s Driving Home for Christmas (19 Nov -04 Jan).  A hilarious brand-new comedy about been stranded far from home during the festive season.

The Lyric’s voyage with Blackout continues into its 5th year.  Through the Lyric’s Creative Learning department, this initiative educates young people about the consequences of crimes and realities of prison life whilst also employing emerging actors and artists.

With its continued aim to support local artists and companies the Lyric is thrilled to welcome a host of wonderful productions throughout the season.  Conor Grimes and Kevin McAleer join forces as two vaudeville players travelling across the Great Western Way as famine stalks the land in SPUD! (31 Aug -14 Sep). The brilliant Nuala McKeever returns with a new one-woman play How to be a Tube!  (18 -22 Sep).

There is also a jam-packed programme of visiting shows this summer.  Highlights include the return of the smash hit of last summer, the musical version of Tony Macaulay’s Paperboy (01-04 Aug)by the British Youth Music Theatre. Marie Jones’ exceptional A Night in November (12-21 Jun) by Sodabread production and John B Keane’s tender and robust comedy of love The Matchmaker (04-06 Jul).  Conor Mitchell’s Belfast Ensemble continue their exciting experimental adventures in hi-fi staging during their summer BASH! (28-30 Jun) and later in the year with Abomination (07-10 Nov) as part of the Outburst Festival.  Geraldine Hughes returns with the Brassneck production of Belfast Blues (06-11 Aug) and to top it all off Sir Ian McKellen will take to the Lyric stage as part of his sold out 80th birthday tour, generously donating the proceeds to fundamental work of the Lyric’s Creative Learning department.

Enjoy a voyage of discovery at Rathlin Sound Maritime Festival

Rathlin Sound Maritime Festival is set to make a splash when it returns to Ballycastle and Rathlin Island later this month.

Until June 2nd get closer to the maritime heritage of this very special part of the Causeway Coast and Glens through an exciting and engaging programme of events.

The celebration is packed full of seafaring, food experiences, artisan produce, live music and lots more on water and dry land while a mesmerising range of sailing vessels will bring the story of sea travel to life. For a must-see sight, watch as a flotilla makes its way across Rathlin Sound on Friday 31st May. A Viking longboat, drontheims and currachs, including the magnificent Colmcille and Menapian which at almost 40ft long are two of the largest of their kind in Northern Ireland, all feature in this magnificent fleet.

For foodies, the Ulster Chowder Championship is a must see in the Cookery Theatre on Bank Holiday Monday (May 27th). This is a fabulous opportunity to celebrate our sea food and skilled chefs. With a chance to compete in the world famous Kinsale competition next year it’s all to cook for in the seafront marquee!

New this year, The School of Irish Archaeology brings ‘The Big Dig’ to the festival.  This fun hands-on workshop is educational, engaging and interactive offering the experience of a real life dig for Viking treasures and artefacts. Guided by a team of professionals, this dig gives children the opportunity to experience what it is like to be an archaeologist whilst learning about the lifestyles of their Viking ancestors.

On Rathlin Island, take an evening tour of the West Light Seabird Centre with the RSPB and watch as the red beam shines out across the sea over one of the biggest seabird breeding colonies in Europe. Visit an art installation in the unique surroundings of a cliff-edge Coastguard hut or meet the crew of the Mamoch Mor Currach and learn more about this inspiring community-built traditional boat for a taste of contemporary maritime culture.

Portaferry Sails & Sounds

New Four Day Boating,  Music, dance family Festival in Portaferry on the shores of Strangford Lough Co. Down

Portaferry is preparing for a four-day Sailing and Music and family fun festival which will be the biggest maritime event to come to Ards Peninsula  since the very popular ‘Galway Hooker Festival’ of many years ago.  The event is being hosted by Portaferry Sailing Club and will centre around their Club House on the Shore Front.  Events will spread out from the Club to all parts of the town ensuring plenty of family fun for everyone. 

The Club is running the festival we are expecting boats from all over the lough and North Down, Scotland, England, Wales, Isle of Man & ROI and farther afield.   The boats will gather on Thursday and Friday for registration , race on Saturday the 22nd in Strangford Lough and have a final Parade of Sail on Sunday the 23rd.

ForM Sculpture Exhibition Returns to Bangor Castle’s Walled Garden

The ForM Sculpture Exhibition opens this Saturday 1 June in Bangor Castle’s Walled Garden. For the whole month of June, the garden will be transformed into an alfresco art gallery when it showcases 42 beautiful sculptures.

The event is a wonderful opportunity to view these specially created pieces of art all inspired by the garden, whilst enjoying the tranquil surroundings that this beautiful space has to offer. 

This juxtaposition of art and nature offers a unique experience and the whole family will enjoy seeking out sculptures located in the garden’s walkways, plants and flowerbeds. Some of the works are striking and of large scale whilst other smaller works will need to be sought out of the greenery. Pick up a map at the gate and see what you can find!

Ards and North Down Borough Council’s Arts Officer, Patricia Hamilton said, ‘This eclectic mix of sculptures, which come in all shapes and sizes, provide a unique garden experience with an added dimension. This is the largest ForM exhibition we have had since its inception in June 2012 and we are pleased that its reputation has grown throughout Ireland and the participating artists have reflected that’.

ForM will remain open until 30 June and is free to visit.  Some of the sculptures are available to buy.  Visitors can pick up a map and catalogue on arrival and are also invited to vote for their favourite sculpture in the ForM Competition.

Bangor to welcome back Phoenix Tall Ship at Sea Bangor!

The Phoenix of Dell Quay tall ship is preparing to set sail for the two-day Sea Bangor maritime festival which takes place this Saturday 1 and Sunday 2 June!

The Phoenix Tall Ship will be part of the Sea Bangor festivities (1-2 June).

The majestic vessel will dock at Bangor’s seafront for the first time since 2017, giving visitors to the seaside town an opportunity to climb on board during both days of the popular festival.

Usually docked at Charlestown in Cornwall, the Phoenix was originally built in Denmark back in 1929 and started her life as an evangelical Mission Schooner. She has enjoyed a varied life and even featured in the Ridley Scott ‘1492 Conquest of Paradise’ movie.

The tall ship joins a jam-packed maritime themed programme during the course of the weekend that includes entertainment and activities for all the family.

Organised by Ards and North Down Borough Council with support from Bangor Chamber of Commerce, South Eastern Regional College (SERC), Bangor Marina and Translink, thousands of visitors from the Borough and beyond will visit Bangor to see a host of water and aerial displays.

In the Sky

The AeroSuperBatics Wingwalking team of high flyers are among the main attractions. They will swoop over the lough in their modified Breitling Stearman biplanes at 4.30pm on the Saturday and 3pm on the Sunday, performing incredible feats in the sky in what will be a spectacular aerial display above Bangor.

Get Your Feet Wet

And if you fancy getting your feet wet, you can take part in one of the Royal Yachting Association’s sailing experiences on the Saturday or try kayaking on the Sunday. There will be boat tours on offer too, allowing you to explore Bangor’s coastline from the sea.

On the Ground

A bit closer to earth, you can watch Daniel Doyle create stunning sculptures made out of sand near the entrance to the Long Hole while the Eisenhower Pier will host the popular Rowing Challenge which features local community teams competing for the Sea Bangor Cup. Watch them battle it out for the prestigious trophy!

Those keen to keep their feet firmly on dry land can visitthe Army Reserve Village in the Marina car park or head to the Tented Village in Quay Street car park. The Tiddler’s Tent Silent Disco is open for all the family while the ‘Under the Sea’ creative experience marquee will inspire and engage.

If you fancy a gentle ride, you can check out the funfair rides or jump on the Panoramic Wheel and get a bird’s eye view of the marina. You might even be able to spot Detritus of the Deep from above. Having exited the depths of the ocean, he’ll be roaming around the crowds on his stilts in an attempt to find out why his sea home is being destroyed by pollution.

Food, Glorious Food!

All that activity will get those tummies rumbling and the Sea Bangor Café will serve a variety of food with a focus on local business and local produce. Plus, there will be cookery demonstrations and competitions hosted by SERC, including ‘Bangor’s Best Balti’ (pre-registration essential at visitardsandnorthdown.com), helping to find the master chefs in our midst.

The food stalls, street theatre and live music from different local bands in the Open House Shanty Shack will all add to the bustling atmosphere so make sure you come to Sea Bangor this weekend!

Bushmills Salmon and Whiskey Festival returns with a renewed ‘foodie’ focus!

Bushmills Salmon and Whiskey Festival will have an even bigger ‘foodie focus’ when it returns to the village from June 7th – June 9th.

Celebrity chef Ian Orr, from the multi award winning Browns Bonds Hill Group, will be the special guest in the festival Cookery Theatre on Saturday 8th June from 12pm. Located in Main Street car park, visitors can enjoy a unique opportunity to get up close as Ian demonstrates his culinary prowess with delicious recipes using the best of local produce. As a previous guest on the popular Saturday Kitchen food show and regarded as one of Ireland’s top talents, event organisers are delighted to have his support this year.

On Sunday, it’s the turn of some of the region’s best local chefs to showcase the foodie repertoire of the Causeway Coast and Glens with appearances by Trudy Brolly (Ocho Tapas, Portrush), Pol Shields (Marine Hotel, Ballycastle) and Kevin Farren (Bayview Hotel, Portballintrae). Compered by local food tour guide Wendy Gallagher, the live audience will benefit from her specialised knowledge and passion for local produce.

Over the weekend make sure to visit Bushmills Distillery, the oldest of its kind in Ireland and a unique attraction where you can sample the famous whiskey while learning more about the story of whiskey distilling in the village which stretches back for centuries

To celebrate the International Year of the Salmon, the Salmon Fisheries will be open throughout the weekend (Saturday 10am-5pm and Sunday 12pm-4pm) offering free talks and tours showcasing ‘The Cycle of Wild Atlantic Salmon’ and the history of the station. Fly tying and casting demonstrations, fish tanks, visitor stands and information on outreach and funding for angling events will also be available.

Throughout the weekend, take part in the self-guided Bushmills Taste Trail highlighting unique specialties from a range of local cafes and award winning restaurants. Maps can be picked up from participating businesses allowing you to plot your own course through the village from The Old Bushmills Distillery to The Bushmills Inn with many tasty stops along the way. For those with an interest in history, a free ‘Taste of Bushmills Heritage’ guided walk, led by Art Ward of Bushmills Walking Tours, will let you experience the conservation village’s unique history, heritage and culture. The Festival’s main attractions over the weekend will follow the hotly anticipated Bushmills Banquet which takes place on Friday evening. Building on its inaugural success last year, the Banquet is already a sell out. If you are lucky enough to have a ticket, the collaborative gourmet event will celebrate Bushmills Irish Whiskey and serve up festival themed dishes from local restaurants and artisan food producers.

Simon & Garfunkel are “Homeward Bound”for the Market Place Theatre, Armagh

Critically acclaimed as one of the world’s greatest tribute shows, ‘Simon & Garfunkel Through The Years’ returns with an all new production. Featuring a full live band, moving video footage and stunning vocal harmonies, this spectacular concert takes audiences on a journey through the songs and history of Simon and Garfunkel.

The show is a celebration of the incredible rise to fame of two boys from Queens, New York who would go on to become the most successful folk-rock duo of the 1960’s, selling 38 million albums in the US alone, winning 10 Grammy Awards and being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Discover the magic of Puppets this weekend at Ards Puppet Festival!

This Bank Holiday weekend Ards Arts Centre and Conway Square, Newtownards will be animated with puppets in all shapes and sizes when the annual Ards Puppet Festival returns to the town!

Over the two days, Sunday 26 and Monday 27 May, the jam-packed programme will offer scheduled shows, street theatre, walkabouts and craft workshops.

The Conway Square programme of activities which runs from 12noon to 4pm each day, includes colourful street-theatre, whacky walkabouts and puppet-making workshops. Watch the ‘Billy Goats Gruff’ as they tussle with the grumpy troll, queue up at the ‘Rat Choc Chip’ ice-cream van and get more than you’ve bargained for, enjoy a ‘Teddy Bears Picnic’ or traditional ‘Punch and Judy’. More creative visitors can get stuck into puppet-making at the free interactive workshops where children can build their very own puppets, with help from professional artists.

One of the programme highlights will be performances by the Budapest Marionettes. Performing for the first time in Northern Ireland, Bence Sarkadi is a Hungarian marionette artist / puppeteer who travels the globe, entertaining crowds with his award-winning, one-man show. Prepare to be amazed as Bence’s mastery brings his puppets to life. All Conway Square performances are FREE of charge.

Lyngo Theatre bring their productions of Tom Thumb and Jack and the Beanstalk to the festival where cBeebies’ Patrick Lynch will work his magic, retelling these classic tales in the magical Lyngo way.  Clydebuilt Theatre will make a welcome return to the festival with their adorable ‘Lost Bear’ production and the much-loved Banyan Theatre will also return with their enchanting show ‘The Hedgehog Prince’. All scheduled shows cost £3 per ticket, advanced booking is required. Please note the 11.30am performance of Jack and the Beanstalk on Sunday is now sold out but there are tickets remaining for the other shows.
