OVER 50 AND READY FOR ACTION!

ENJOY A GREAT DAY OUT AND MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN YOUR LOCAL COMMUNITY

Calling all over 50s! Try your hand at volunteering...

As part of Age Awareness Week, Volunteer Now with support from the North West Volunteer Centre and Business in the Community is calling on over 50s throughout Northern Ireland to join them for a great day out and to try their hand at volunteering!

The One Good Reason Action Day, taking place on Wednesday 29th September, offers over 50s the chance to give something back to the many charities and voluntary organisations that provide vital services within their local community.

Gardening, painting, paired reading with children in local primary schools and conservation work are just some of the volunteering opportunities available across various locations in Northern Ireland, including Belfast, Derry-Londonderry, Newry and Ballymena.  Participants can set themselves up with a free breakfast in these areas from 8.30am before volunteering from 10am -1pm.  Everyone will be made very welcome, whether they come along by themselves, as a group of friends or as a ‘team’ representing a local church, community group, sports club or employer.

The day is free of charge and is part of Volunteer Now’s One Good Reason campaign which encourages over 50s to give volunteering a try and to see first hand how beneficial, enjoyable and satisfying it can be both for them as an individual and for others within their community.  The campaign has been developed with the underlying thinking that we can all find plenty of reasons not to do something – but when we find one good reason to do something we usually do it!

Wendy Osborne, CEO of Volunteer Now said; “We hope that men and women over the age of 50 in Northern Ireland will embrace this opportunity to have a great day out whilst taking up the challenge to make a real difference in their local community.  Volunteering is good for the volunteer and the community we live in and local organisations benefit greatly from the skills and experience provided by over 50s.  As well as being a chance to get out and about and meet new people, it might just be the reason you need to make volunteering a more permanent part of your life.  We hope that the range of opportunities across Northern Ireland will offer something for everyone.”

Anne O’Reilly, Age Awareness Week Spokesperson said; “Too often those from older age groups are portrayed as passive recipients of services in our communities.  This One Good Reason Action Day is a fantastic opportunity for over 50s to challenge this stereotype whilst recognising the invaluable contribution that older volunteers already make to local organisations.  I would encourage those who volunteer throughout the year, as well as those who have never volunteered, to come out for this day to showcase what older volunteers can do as part of Age Awareness Week.”

The One Good Reason Action Day is being supported by Business in the Community who are asking local businesses to encourage their staff aged 50 and over to take part.  Local businesses and organisations are also showing their support by providing venues and breakfast for the Action Day, including:

  • Belfast – Breakfast venue is New Forge Lane Country Club, supported by Spar
  • Derry – Londonderry – Breakfast venue is ILEX Ebrington with breakfast supplied by ILEX.
  • Ballymena – Breakfast venue is Michelin Athletic Club, supported by Michelin.
  • Newry – Breakfast venue is Bagenal’s Castle, supported by Newry City Council

Participants will be able to pick a volunteering activity and location that suits them ahead of the day.  Will you take up the challenge?  To register, please contact Helen Connolly on 028 9020 0858 or email helen.connolly@volunteernow.co.uk. Tommy Reilly + Jason Clarke Spring & Airbrake 12th September.

CDC LEISURE PRESENTS

TOMMY REILLY

+ JASON CLARKE
SPRING AND AIBRAKE, BELFAST
SUNDAY 12TH SEPTEMBER 2010

£12 / 8pm

Self taught singer/songwriter Jason Clarke will play support to Tommy Reilly in Spring & Airbrake. Clarke started writing at the tender age of 18, with his first song “Payback”.   It was a chance meeting with Brian Kennedy which gave Jason the boost of confidence to move from playing guitar to songwriting. Jason believes that his writing style is constantly evolving with every song.  Now, at the age of 25, and having just graduated from university, he is concentrating on making a name for himself in the world of singer/songwriters.

The Belfast born singer is certainly not an amateur musician, having supported Paolo Nutini on tour and has shared the stage with well known bands such as Fighting with Wire, General Fiasco and Jetplane Landing. He has also co-written and been master classed by world renowned professional song-writers, including Beth Nielsen Chapman, Iain Archer and JD Souther.

One of Jason’s biggest influences is the great Michael Jackson, who’s album “Bad” first introduced him to music. He also lists Annie Lennox, Sting, Aimee Mann, Ben Harper, John Mayer, Gavin Degraw and Jason Mraz as artists who have influenced his style over time. He has often been compared to that of Cat Stevens and Tracey Chapman due to the acoustic nature of his writing with his new collection of songs, representing a deeper more mature sound.

In 2006 Jason released an EP of six songs and later reworked the EP by adding new tracks resulting in his completed debut album – Talking In Hindsight.  Jason is working hard to make sure you see him on a stage somewhere soon.

Jason Clarke will be performing in Belfast’s Spring and Airbrake on Sunday 12th September 2010. Tickets are priced £12 plus booking fee. Tickets available from www.ticketmaster.ie and Katy Daly’s Bar.

Lager Has Evolved – GUINNESS® Black Lager is coming to a pub near you!

GUINNESS Black Lager is offering pub-goers in Northern Ireland the chance to experience a new evolution in lager at events in pubs across Northern Ireland this week.

The Master Brewers of GUINNESS have built upon 250 years of rich brewing heritage to create new GUINNESS Black Lager. Hailed as ‘lager evolved’ it takes lager enjoyment to a new level by combining the refreshing taste of lager with a unique flavourful character.

The new lager, best enjoyed ice cold from the bottle, is currently being test marketed throughout Northern Ireland. Its unique black colour comes from the roasted GUINNESS barley which is cold- brewed for a crisp, refreshing lager taste.

Pub-goers at the GUINNESS Black Lager events in the pubs below could also be in with a chance of winning an incredible trip to Ibiza for one of the legendary season-closing parties courtesy of GUINNESS Black Lager and Cool FM, by simply by uploading a photo of themselves enjoying their night out to the Cool FM Facebook page.

Darwin Deez

Fresh from their amazing Oxegen performance last month Darwin Deez have announced a Belfast date at the Limelight on Wednesday 10th November. Tickets priced £9  are on sale this Wednesday. The band first came to attention late on last year with the release of their debut single Constellations.

Darwen Deez will embark on a UK tour in November after a successful self titled debut album was a Top 5 hit in the UK indie charts on its release earlier this year. It is highly doubtful that there is a more delightfully offbeat pop star than Darwin Deez right now! No other musician around would proclaim undying love for both Q and not U and John Mayer, or describe his sublimely addictive strain of pop as “a little bit “Thriller”, a little bit Dismemberment Plan”. Not many others would choreograph synchronised dance routines to Beyonce and the Bangles which erupt out of nowhere in the middle of playing live. And certainly, it would be hard to think of anyone else who can start a song by cribbing “Twinkle Twinkle, Little Star” as the opening line on one song, while rhyming “Los Angeles” with “televangelist” on another. But then, there is nobody around right now quite like Darwin Deez, and this, his wonderfully off-kilter debut album, is testament to that fact.

Darwin mines a musical vein entirely his own. His songs are mostly stripped down and kept simple and unadorned (which figures, as he recorded the album in his own apartment using only a PC and a mike) but they pulse and throb deliciously with life and a rare wit. This album is by turns joyous and heart tugging, winsome and wistful, glorious and gorgeous, buoyed aloft by Deez’s ear for a soaring chorus and a catchy tune, not to mention his knack for a killer couplet.

Certain to be one of the hottest tickets in town, don’t miss Darwin Deez, live at The Limelight on November 10th. Tickets are on sale this Wednesday priced £9.  Tickets are available from Ticketmaster, Katy Daly’s bar and www.cdcleisure.com.

THE LIMELIGHT
MONDAY 27TH SEPTEMBER 2010

“It’s got incredible beauty, incredible anger – everything that music can do.” (Hall Willner)

Tim Robbins

Actor, director, screenwriter & musician Tim Robbins is set to embark on his first ever European tour including a date at The Limelight on September 27th.  He will tour with The Rogue Gallery Band. Tim Robbins is best known for his roles played in The Shawshank Redemption, Mystic River and Bull Durham. He has won many awards for his work in film including an Oscar for directing Dead Man Walking as well as an Oscar and Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for Mystic River.

His 1995 writer/director triumph Dead Man Walking – for which he was Oscar nominated – also provided fertile ground for Robbins’ musical interests. After sending a rough cut of the film to a selection of songwriters who had inspired him over the years, Robbins co-produced the film’s lauded soundtrack for Sony. Bruce Springsteen, Johnny Cash, Eddie Vedder, Patti Smith, Tom Waits, Steve Earle and Nusrat Fateh Ali Kahn all contributed. Releasing your first album at the age of 51 is a curious thing to do when you’re already a global, Oscar winning star known for your work both on the screen, behind it as a director of film, and theatre but not as a musician.

The Rogues Gallery is made up of a host of world class musicians. Featuring on the album are Kate St. John, Leo Abrahams, David Coulter, Roger Eno, Rory McFarlane, Andrew Newmark and Dudley Phillips. The live performances will include Kate St. John, David Coulter, Roger Eno, Rory McFarlane, Liam Bradley, Steve Jones and Jack Pinter.

Tim Robbins has joined forces with his friend, the legendary producer Hal Willner for the release of his debut album on September 27th. Before recording his first album Robbins wanted to “understand what my voice was and what kind of stories I wanted to tell. I think I’m ready to tell those stories now.”  ‘Tim Robbins & the Rogues Gallery Band’ is a nine track collection of raggle taggle and rousing gypsy Americana, where each song is a story, every one told with passion and raw emotional honesty.  Keep an eye out for this exceptional release on September 27th.  Tim Robbins will play to The Limelight, Belfast on Monday 27th September 2010 during a UK tour.  Tickets are priced £17.50  and are available at Ticketmaster, Katy Daly’s bar and www.cdcleisure.com

National Trust wants your books!

The National Trust is calling on the public to donate their used and unwanted books to their second-hand bookshops, run entirely by volunteers, in locations throughout Northern Ireland.

All manner of publications and music – fiction, biographies, cookery books, children’s titles, coffee table books, CDs or LPs as well as music sheets will be gratefully received by the charity’s book shop volunteers.

There are currently six shops in Northern Ireland, located at Mount Stewart, Castle Ward, The Argory, Rowallane Garden, Florence Court and Springhill.  All profits received through the selling of used books are re-invested back in to the property to support special conservation projects.

Everyone loves to peruse a second hand bookshop and pick up a rare novel, or childhood favourite story that was discarded long ago.  With more and more people tightening their purse strings, National Trust second-hand book shops offer the opportunity to pick up a bargain and to support Northern Ireland’s leading conservation charity.

If you have any used books you would like to donate to your local bookshop, please contact your local National Trust property.

Why not visit your local shop and pick up a bargain.  Also make a note in your diary for the annual Book Fairs.  At Castle Ward on 30-31 October you’ll be hard pushed not to find a bargain while on the 7 November The Argory Book Fair will have more books on offer than you can carry!

Wan Big Weekend at the Gasyard Féile 2010

This weekend sees The Gasyard Féile 2010 take place in Derry, recently crowned City of Culture 2013. It’s hard to believe that a year has passed since the last festival. Time flies and this year the festival’s organisers really have something to shout about with ‘Wan Big Weekend’ – a show case of the best local talent at a two night outdoor event held at the Gasyard Park.

Featuring some of the hottest musical talent the North-West has to offer, the event is sure to be one of, if not, the highlight of Féile 2010.

Headlining on Saturday night is the fantastic, riff rocking, bluesy and ballsy Swanee River who are fresh from an appearance at the renowned Glasgowbury festival at Draperstown.

If you’re more into singer-songwriter style blues than riff-rammed rock n roll then look no further than Paul Casey on Sunday night. It would seem Casey is now Chris Rea’s best friend having been invited on tour to join Chris as special guest numerous times. Paul has also been on the receiving end of a lot of praise from the legendary guitarist: ‘A talent like this comes along only once in a long while.’

David Gray, Damien Rice and, of course, Chris Rea are noted among Paul Casey’s influences and he certainly wears those influences on his sleeve while still managing to make his sound his own.

Paul Casey

Other performances at ‘The Sound of Free Derry’ on Saturday night include sets from: Here Comes The Landed Gentry, Triggerman. Balkan Alien Sound, Our Krypton Son, No Mean City, The Q, The Flying Castros, The Reverb and Revolution Monday.

Joining Paul Casey at Sunday night’s Féile Finale: Inishowen Gospel Choir, OCB, Sheegus, Luke Mac, Caolan MacDermott as Freddie Mercury and Paul Brown.

All this comes with no gate fee and a full bar will be available. Under 14s must be accompanied by an adult. For more info on other events happening during Féile 2010 contact the festival office on 028 71 262812.
