Today, you can explore its 150-year history of tensions, imprisonment and executions. Learn first-hand about the gaol’s colourful past and gain a memorable insight into its daily routine.

- Hill of The O’Neill & Ranfurly House, Dungannon, County Tyrone. Check website for opening times and dates. The O’Neill was the head of one of Ireland’s most powerful dynasties. This was a family which could number two high kings among its members – and claimed descent from the legendary Niall of the nine hostages. The hill you can stand on today was the centre of the family’s power base and you can enjoy breath-taking panoramic views from their glass observation tower today.

- The Out to Lunch Festival, Belfast, 7 – 29 January. The Out to Lunch Festival is Belfast’s annual winter celebration of music, theatre, comedy and film in the city’s historic Cathedral Quarter. Lunchtime shows come served with a hot lunch for £10 and festival events regularly sell out so early booking is advised.
