  2. Boxing Day Races, Lisburn, 26 December. The Boxing Day Races at Down Royal Racecourse are a Christmas tradition. This long established event, held at Ireland’s oldest race course, guarantees to blow away those cobwebs after a day of excess. Popular with families, everyone is welcome. Gates open at 11am with the first race starting at 12.30pm.

The High Kings – Decade Tour, Enniskillen, 29 December. ’Folk and Roll’, multi-platinum artists ‘The High Kings’ showcase their incredible versatility, bringing a great acoustic flavour to original songs as well as some old favourites at the Ardhowen theatre. Together they play thirteen instruments during their performances and their singing is especially noted for its close harmonies.
  5. New Year’s Eve Black Tie Gala Ball, Belfast, 31 December. The traditional splendour of the luxurious Europa hotel is the backdrop for this black-tie gala ball. This amazing evening unravels with a stylish champagne and canape reception, followed by a sumptuous five-course dinner, while live music from Dave Martin and the Casino Cats will have you up on your feet and dancing the night away. The host for the evening is U105’s DJ Johnny Hero with Santa’s Divas, plus there will be a piper at midnight to herald in the New Year.

Telling the story of peasant boy Jack and his attempts to please his impoverished mother and win the hand of Princess Jill, Jack and the Beanstalk remains one of the best-loved pantomimes of all time. Packed with great song and dance routines, hilarious comedy, dazzling scenes and magical special effects is this spectacular show at the Millennium Forum, starring William Caulfield as Dame Trot.
  9. Jake O’Kane – Still Sittin’ On The Fence, Ballycastle, 28 December. Jake O’Kane, one of Northern Ireland’s top comics and star of the BBC panel show ‘The Blame Game’, is back with a brand new show coming to the Marine Hotel. In his traditional end-of-year review show, Jake will be casting a satirical eye over the preceding twelve months, combining stories and pictures from the Irish News with the madness of the Internet to debunk the great, the not so great, and himself.
  10. The Fureys, Lisburn, 28 December. Legends of Irish music and song The Fureys return to Lagan Valley Island for a fantastic night’s entertainment.   1. Dreamworks Animation in Concert, Belfast, 28 November. A one night only special event at the SSE Arena, featuring music and iconic movie moments from DreamWorks Animation’s hit films including Shrek, Kung Fu Panda, How to Train Your Dragon and many more. The concert features favourite moments from DreamWorks Animation’s most beloved films with music performed by The RTE Orchestra.
  2. Basketball Hall of Fame Classic Belfast 2017, Belfast, 1-2 December. For the first time in history, college basketball will be played outside of the United States of America in Europe at Belfast’s SSE Arena. The two-day tournament will feature Holy Cross vs. Manhattan College and La Salle University vs. Towson University, followed by consolation and championship play on the second day.
  3. The Carol Ship on Strangford Lough, Co. Down, 1-2 December. Christmas starts in Portaferry and Strangford as Christmas music rings out across Strangford Lough. The Strangford Ferry will be decorated with Christmas lights and choirs and musicians will perform on each sailing. There will be Christmas markets in Portaferry and Strangford and children’s entertainment in both villages.
  4. Ulster Orchestra – The Snowman: Family Concert, Belfast, 2 December. One of the most popular children’s books ever written, The Snowman is even more enchanting when it’s experienced in this big-screen, animated version at the Waterfront Hall, with live music by the Ulster Orchestra and a young singer performing the iconic ‘Walking in the Air’.
  5. Christmas Fair at The Argory, Co. Tyrone, 2-3 December. The festive period is not complete without a visit to The Argory’s Christmas Fair, featuring a number of craft, food and drink stalls, as well as traditional festive entertainment. Escape the high street crowds and enjoy a festive day out for all the family at the Enniskillen Christmas Craft & Food Fair in Enniskillen Town hall. Soak up the atmosphere among the craft and food stalls and pick up that something special for a loved one.
  9. Gingerbread Alley, Co. Armagh, 25 November-22 December. A chance to view the stunning exhibition at of gingerbread creations by local chefs and bakeries at Armagh Market Place Theatre & Arts Centre. This year’s competition theme is Happily Ever After, with the winning creation being announced on Georgian Day (25th November).
  10. Murder Mystery Evenings, Co. Tyrone, 1-2 December. It’s Christmas 1943, war rages abroad but here at the big house the enemy lurks within. There has been a murder but who did it, what has ice-cream got to do with it? Join Lissan House for some fatal attraction, fun and forensics. Come dressed to kill in 1940’s style service or civvies.   1. Armagh Georgian Festival, Co. Armagh, 23-26 November. Armagh’s much loved Georgian Festival returns to mark the beginning of the festive season. The festival includes the return of the Georgian Banquet, where guests can travel through the mists of time to Georgian Armagh. Festive market stalls hosted by traders in traditional costume will offer high quality gifts and locally produced food and drink. The children’s Christmas market will also return as well as horse and carriage rides, live music, talks and tours. As darkness falls, the dramatic light show will burst to life, illuminating the backdrop of the Georgian Market House and creating a festive atmosphere with contemporary and seasonal music.
  2. Foyle Film Festival, Derry~Londonderry, 17 – 26 November. Foyle Film Festival is an annual celebration of independent films, acclaimed feature length movies, documentaries and short films. Films include the Northern Ireland premiere of Walk With Me, Battle of the Sexes and family favourite, Wallace and Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit, along with many others.   3. Hugo Duncan and Friends at The Portico, Portaferry, Co.Down, 24 November. A night of great entertainment as the ever-popular Hugo Duncan sings in the unique surroundings of The Portico in Portaferry. Hugo will be joined by Philomena Begley, Stephen Smyth, Boxcar Brian and Country Harmony. An evening not to be missed by fans of the Strabane man.
  4. 2017 Friendship Four, SSE Arena, Belfast. 24-25 November. The Friendship Four hockey tournament is the first and only NCAA Division hockey tournament outside of the United States of America. The tournament includes four different NCAA Division Universities from America travelling to Belfast for six days to compete in a four game tournament over two days.  The 2017 competing Universities have been confirmed as Clarkson University, RPI, Providence University and the University of Maine.
  5. 20th anniversary of Titanic the movie, Titanic Belfast, 19 November – 19 December. 20 years ago the blockbuster film, telling the story of the luxury liner’s fateful maiden voyage through the love story of passengers Jack and Rose, premiered on screens and became one of the top grossing films of all time. To mark the occasion, Titanic Belfast which has been described by Titanic movie director, James Cameron, as ‘magnificent and dramatic’, is hosting a blockbuster line-up of events including a Titanic Movie Drive In, Afternoon Tea and Movie Experience and a Movie Magic Month.
  6. Festive Fair, Derry~Londonderry, 25 November. Creggan Country Park will be transformed into a festive hub of activity with local arts and crafts businesses promoting their Christmas delights. Creggan Country Kitchen will host a festive BBQ on the day. Mulled wine and hot chocolate will be available to purchase throughout the day.
  7. Cookstown Christmas Lights Switch On, Co. Tyrone, 24 November. Christmas in Cookstown gets officially underway this year with the big switch on of the town’s Christmas lights at 5.30pm. Watch the streets come alive, in what has to be the most spectacular display in the country, that will make you know for sure that Christmas is really just around the corner. Get into the festive season, wrap up warm and come join in the fun.
  8. Sleeping Beauty, Lisburn, Co. Antrim, 23-24 November. Doogan Dance Academy has worked together with the Russian ballet in a project called Dancing Without Borders to produce their version of Sleeping Beauty. This is a great privilege for the dancers to work with such elite and professional dancers in order to create a show that is not to be missed for the whole family in the run up to Christmas.
  9. Northern Ireland Farm Toy & Model Show, Portrush, Co. Antrim, 24 November. Magherabuoy House Hotel will host this show with plenty of ideas for Christmas presents for kids and adults alike. On display will be tractors, trailers, tankers, manure spreaders, forage harvesters, animals, pedal tractors, wooden farmyards, DVDs, clothing, crafts, cars, lorries and much more.
  10. An Evening with Bette Midler, Downpatrick, Co. Down, 20 November. She’s feisty, she’s naughty and she’s got a voice full to the brim with character and beauty. An Evening with Bette Midler is a wicked ride through the life of one of the world’s greatest divas. Featuring such smash hits as ‘From a Distance’ and ‘Wind Beneath My Wings’, this new music piece of theatre received standing ovations when it premiered at The Playhouse earlier this year.

  9. Gems of the Mournes Hike, Newcastle, 18 November. Tackle Slieve Bearnagh whilst passing the feet of Slieve Meelmore and Meelbeg, eventually heading South into the heart of the Mournes, Doan.   7. Echo Echo Festival of Dance and Movement, Derry~Londonderry, 7-18 November. This festival returns to Waterloo House for its fifth edition with an outstanding programme of dance, movement and physical theatre. Performances include a series of improvisations in various city locations and popular short works by local and visiting artists created from the festival open call.
  8. Titanic Taster Photography Tour, Belfast, 11 November. Become a Titanic inspired photographer for the day and learn lots of top tips and techniques, all while exploring Titanic Quarter’s Maritime Heritage. On this interactive tour you will be transported around the quarter on the Wee Tram. Hop off stops will include the historic Slipways, Titanic’s Dock and Pump-House, and the Samson and Goliath cranes.
  9. Ceramic Christmas Cottages, Omagh, 7, 14 and 21 November. This three-part course at An Cregan allows participants to design their own ceramic winter cottage.   10. Romeo & Juliet, Coleraine, 7 November. The Riverside Theatre presents Shakespeare’s tale of the star-crossed lovers. The result is a ballet with a dazzling combination of passion and hatred, comedy and high tragedy.

  1. Derry Halloween, Derry~Londonderry, 28-31 October. On the 31st anniversary party supernatural beings and the souls of the dead flood into the City of Bones. Highlights include the fantastic ‘Awakening the Walls’ event – light, fire, sculpture, music and performers rouse the walls awake in a supernatural animation trail on and around the city walls, the largest Halloween street carnival parade and costume party in Europe and the marvellous firework finale over the River Foyle.
  2. Museum of the Moon, The Guildhall, Derry~Londonderry, 28-31 October. Experience Luke Jerram’s Museum of the Moon, an internationally touring work featuring detailed Nasa imagery of the Moon’s surface and atmospheric soundtrack created by BAFTA and Ivor Novello award winning composer, Dan Jones. As part of the festival there are special ticketed events under the moon including Samhain sessions, little monsters shows, a spooktacular disco and the Mayor’s tea dance.
  3. Halloween Happenings, Ballycastle, 31 October. Enjoy the annual Halloween Parade and the spectacular fireworks display at the harbour. A fancy dress competition will assemble at Dalriada Hospital at 6.45pm making its way through the town to the seafront. Floats, skeletons, creepy characters, live music and fire poi will all add to this annual parade.
  4. Halloween Crafts & Games Club, Armagh, 30-31 October, 10am-4pm. Let children unleash their inner artist creating amazing Halloween crafts at the excellent Halloween Craft & Games Club at the Palace Stables. For 5-12-year-olds, with a fully supervised lunch.
  5. Lucy Worsley’s Favourite Queen, Hillsborough Castle, 3 November. Join Historic Royal Palaces’ Chief Curator, Lucy Worsley, for an evening talk on the tragic and neglected Queen Caroline, wife of King George II.  Discover the secrets of Georgian royal life and how Queen Caroline shaped society as we know it today.   8. Weeping Window by Paul Cummins, Belfast, October – 3 December. Weeping Window is a cascade comprising several thousand handmade ceramic poppies seen pouring from a high window of the Ulster Museum to the ground below.   9. Joel Mawhinney – Phobia, Coleraine, 30 October. Joel Mawhinney is not like other teenagers. Forsaking higher education, Joel has chosen the way of the mentalist. In this Halloween Special, Joel will attempt to break inside your mindset and alter the way you see your biggest fears. Expected the unexpected, the bizarre and the miraculous, in this twisted, yet hilarious experience at the Riverside Theatre.
  10. John O’Connor Writing School and Literary Arts Festival, Armagh, 3-5 November. This innovative festival honours the broad literary and cultural heritage of Armagh. Supporting the development of new writers, students can specialise in a genre from a choice of five taught by renowned tutors with talks by industry specialists. Genre options include fiction, song writing, screenwriting, stage writing and poetry.

Carlisle Memorial Church plays host to excellence in this years’ Belfast International Arts Festival, as the high Victorian neo-Gothic building will display a significant exhibition by one of Ireland’s leading international artists, Hughie O’Donoghue. This exhibition of paintings, painted constructions and sculpture draw on the artist’s own experience and connections, people and places that he knew or knew of.
  4. City of Derry International Choral Festival, 25-29 October. This choral music festival brings more than 60 choirs to Derry~Londonderry, hailing from countries across Europe.  A  celebration of all that choral singing has to offer, activities include concerts by world-renowned vocal groups, competitions for choirs, workshops and educational events for singers and conductors, community concerts and choral trails in landmark locations across Derry~Londonderry and the surrounding area.
  5. Phantom Flyer Ghost Train, Downpatrick, 28-31 October. There is something strange coming to the Downpatrick & County Down Railway this Halloween. If you are brave enough to visit a graveyard on Halloween, join Merlin the Great Wizard on his haunted grotto train. On Halloween night there will also be a fireworks display after the last train in Downpatrick Town Centre. Tickets available from DownRail.co.uk.
  6. Purple Turnip Festival, Lisburn, 28 October. Market Square welcomes the Purple Turnip Festival for its ninth year. The festival includes the terrific purple turnip hunt, free craft activities, an interactive light floor and the opportunity to get up close and personal with a wide range of exotic animals. This event is free and suitable for families.
  7. Sleepy Hollow, Strabane, 26-28 October. The Arts Academy present to The Alley Arts & Conference Centre this year’s pantomime for a spooktacular Halloween. Arts academy students combine with talent from Tyrone, Derry and Donegal to produce a fantastic show of Sleepy Hollow fit for all ages. Tickets available from Alley-Theatre.com.
  8. Jail of Horror, Crumlin Road Gaol, Belfast, 13-31 October. This year’s Halloween Programme is even bigger with both the ‘Jail of Horror’ and the ‘Paranormal Ghost Hunt’ taking place. The one-of-a-kind ‘Jail of Horror’ tour through Belfast’s oldest prison will offer a terrifying experience and is guaranteed to scare even the bravest of visitors.   9. Ghostly Slieve Gullion, Newry, Co. Down, 28 October. With the season of Halloween creeping over the Ring of Gullion the creatures of Slieve Gullion are beginning to awaken.   10. Naturally North Coast & Glens Halloween Artisan Market, Ballycastle, 29 October. Experience this unique artisan market in the North Coast and Glens region of Northern Ireland. Market visitors will have every sense tantalised through the colourful art and crafts, the delicious smell and taste of fresh food produce and the sound of musicians providing a backdrop to the buzz of traders and customers chatting and laughing.
