Star-Studded Fundraiser For Those Hit By Cathedral Buildings Blaze

‘Arson Around’ cabaret evening in Black Box to support fire victims

A massive festive fundraiser is set to help businesses destroyed in October’s fire in the Cathedral Buildings, on Belfast’s Donegall Street.

The Arson Around FUNdRazer will be hosted in the Black Box on Hill Street by Smashing Buttons and will feature more than 11 acts and a ‘Raised for the Razed’ Raffle. It takes place on December 12, from 7-11pm.

Organiser Tina Kelly of Smashing Buttons explained that this was about backing those who were a creative hub in the heart of the city.

“Lifetimes’ worth of work were destroyed, which can never be replaced,” she said, ‘but with the kindness and generosity of the people of Belfast we will breathe life back into the creative community who were so badly devastated. Times are tough but we are tougher.

“All the artists performing are either victims of the fire themselves, or friends and supporters. All funds raised will be put towards re-building the community of those affected.”

Magician and comedian, George Firehorse, will be MC for the evening, with the Monkey of Truth set to make an appearance.

Comedy Harpist Ursula Burns will be performing live, and there’s a special screening of her hit movie ‘Portrait of a Watcher’ in the Green Room after her set.

Belfast’s trad Irish/Spanish supergroup will be laying on a spectacular set.

“Viva Eire! are a collective of local Spanish and Irish artists and performers, who are coming together to showcase the talents of our Latin and Trad communities here in Belfast,” said Tina.

“Los Dramaticos will be dazzling the audience with songs and instrumental pieces from around Latin America and Spain.

“Their sound is a fusion of the flamenco and Andean traditions. This reflects their heritage. Victor Enriquez is a master charango player from Valparaíso in Chile.

“Paddy Anderson is one of the most accomplished flamenco guitarists in the UK and Ireland.”

Included in the line-up is fiddle player Aidan Mulholland, the violin restorer who lost everything in the fire, including irreplaceable antique instruments that were over 100 years old.

They will be joined by Myles McCormack, whose music is influenced by everything from historical ballads to space prog-rockers, Hawkwind. His songs are lyrically nuanced and deftly describe the tumultuous nature of life.

Every show ticket purchased will receive a free entry to the ‘Raise for the Razed’ Raffle,” said Tina.

“Lucky winners will walk away with prizes such as two tickets to see Elton John, two tickets for Lionel Richie, a four-person party-pass to Paolo Nutini or two tickets for Paul Heaton & Jacqui Abbott (The Beautiful South)’s shows in Belfast next year.”

Others include a tree planting session with The Phantom Planter, A couple’s kickboxing session, (handy to settle those post-Christmas arguments), and a £500 Press & PR campaign from Excalibur Press and many more still to be announced.

All the Trad & Spanish artists will be rounding off the performances to close the live show with a massive set-closer number.

They’ll be joined on stage at various times throughout the night by Mexican Dance Belfast, the flamboyant Flamenco dance troupe, who will ensure that we all have a Feliz Navidad!
Miss Onya Becks is hosting a special festive edition of ‘Lip Synch for your DRINK!’, as well as performing a couple of Christmas Classics herself.

Onya has been doing drag for over 10 years, and is based in The Maverick bar every Thursday and Saturday. She’s toured Ireland and the UK and worked with such luminaries as Alan Carr and Kylie Minogue.

Antwan Ruiz will be performing his unique Latin flavoured hip-hop and rap set, including the premiere of his new Christmas single ‘Rudolph’. Less Glock, more Glockenspiel. Antwan is only 20 years old and is already setting the world on fire with his mind-blowing blend of rap and melody.

Tina hints at the unexpected: “Like one of Marley’s ghosts, attendees will be visited by a mystery comedy guest whose presence will be felt by everyone in the room. But he’ll be yanking your chains, not jangling them! All will be revealed on the night.

“The evening will be rounded off by the ‘All Request Christmas Disco’, with no songs barred. All requests will be played. No DJ snobbery here. Okay, maybe not Mariah Carey.”

Mammoth Support For Cathedral Buildings Fire Hit Businesses

Branding and Digital Creative Agency lends office space to ‘homeless’ firms

Branding and Digital Creative Agency, Mammoth, stepped up to help businesses who lost office space when Cathedral Buildings, on Belfast’s Donegall Street was devastated in a fire in October this year.

Within a short space of time the businesses were offered space by Mammoth to enable them to get their companies back up and trading with chairs, desks and WiFi connections on the first floor of their building.

Managing Partner of Mammoth, Jeremy Poots, explained that they were delighted to offer a ray of hope for the people by donating a large section of their offices to create a working space and centre for all the companies affected.

“One of our staff members, Malachy McCrudden asked if we might show support and offer some direct and tangible help to the people that had been affected,” he explained.

“We agreed and gave them use of a large space that would hold 20 plus people, completely free of charge to get them back at their desks and operational as quickly as possible.

“Some of those affected were in tears (of joy this time) from this gesture by Mammoth, such had been the trauma of being upended by the fire.

“Hopefully there is light at the end of the tunnel as the group has been exploring options in a similar nearby building which might work for all those affected to move into in the longer term”.

Paul Kelly, of Form Native, was one of those who saw their business premises affected.
When our studio was lost in the Cathedral Buildings fire it was gutting in every sense,” he said.

“The response from the wider creative community was a great support and raised our spirits at a critical time.

“Mammoth were quick to offer help to their neighbours in need, they gave us space that allowed us to be in the city, catch a breath, and find our feet again.

“We are very grateful for their generosity and while we get ready to move forward again it is with a great appreciation for a creative community that looks out for each other.”

Tina Calder, director and strategist, Excalibur Press, said her business had been building their space in Cathedral Buildings over a number of years to support their work and that of others.

“The fire was absolutely devastating to myself and my staff,” she explained.

“To have lost the space we built up over four years was heartbreaking for the team and the uncertainty of where we would be settling was very worrying.

“Our four offices were also home to Merlin Arts CIC, NI Festival of Writing, BAM magazine and Belfast 247 radio station so the aftermath of the fire didn’t just impact Excalibur Press.

“When Mammoth stepped in and offered us a temporary space until the end of the year I don’t think they really understood the serious impact of their kindness. They gave us something most people struggle to find in life – time. They gave us the space to stop and think and re-evaluate everything whilst continuing to service our clients.

“The team at Mammoth have been incredibly supportive and for that I will be eternally grateful for their kindness and compassion.

“We have been incredibly lucky to have been supported widely by organisations such as the Cathedral Quarter Business Improvement District who we are working with to secure a new place for 2023.

“Whilst the impact and effects of the fire have not gone away it has been made much easier to deal with mentally, emotionally and physically by the wonderful support of our friends, family, clients and peers.”

Mammoth, which started in Belfast over 21 years ago in a small two-desk office space by its two founders, now has 80 staff across offices in Belfast & London. Mammoth had just relocated to their offices in Royal Avenue, overlooking the Cathedral in 2020 after purchasing and renovating the iconic art deco Sinclair House – previously a landmark department store in the city.

“Naturally, coming from the same creative industry sector as many of the businesses in Cathedral Buildings, there was an added empathy to reach out and try to help ease some of the difficult positions these companies and individuals had found themselves in due to the fire,” explained Mr Poots.

“Many staff members in Mammoth had been shocked and dismayed at the devastation caused to Cathedral Buildings – especially as this is only 150m from the Mammoth offices.

“And several of their staff members knew those that had been affected – some were artisans, designers with irreplaceable elements of their work – plus their livelihoods had either gone up in smoke or been put in limbo due to no access being given to the building.

“As the extremely damaged building started the assessment and recovery process it became evident that the local people affected would not be able to get back into the building for months, maybe indefinitely.

“When Malachy McCrudden, a project manager at Mammoth, made the request to the Senior Management that perhaps they could offer some unused office space on an immediate basis. It was instantly agreed, and Mammoth offered a 2,500sqft office space to be used, which included supply of all tables, chairs, lighting and heating for the duration of their stay there.”

To find out how you can support the creatives and businesses impacted by the fire at Cathedral Buildings check out their IndieGoGo fundraiser at https://igg.me/at/cqcollective

There will also be a fundraiser for those affected by the fire at the Black Box on Monday December 12.

Joining the bill will be artists such as Ursula Burns, George Firehouse, Aidan Mulholland (who lost his studio in the fire) and Myles McCormack among others. Tickets are available from https://bit.ly/3umykd7

YMCA World General Secretary on hand as new strategy launched

From left Brian Murtagh, YMCA’s World General Secretary, Carlos Sanvee and Jez Du Puy and Rebecca Byass at the launch of the new strategic plan for YMCA Ireland at Greenhill YMCA, Newcastle.

A sense of belonging local, national and global – the world needs the YMCA more than ever

YMCA’s World General Secretary, Carlos Sanvee, welcomed the new strategic plan for YMCA Ireland that will be based on four values of welcome, opportunity, wellbeing and peace and justice, at a series of events across Ireland with the message that the ‘world needs the YMCA more than ever’.

At events in Lurgan, Newcastle, and Dublin Mr Sanvee heard from young people who were key in developing the new strategy, which is founded on the World Movement Vision 2030 that foresees how the youth organisation will grow and develop in the decade ahead.

The plan outlines YMCA Ireland’s vision as a ‘world where young people, their families and community prosper in body, mind and spirit’,

John Peacock, National Director of YMCA Ireland said the organisation’s continuing vision of a world where young people, their families and communities flourish in body, mind and spirit was key to the plan that was developed with extensive consultation.

“We have spent the last two years consulting with young people, staff and voluntary trustees to agree on a vision, mission and values that will direct our work going forward,” he explained.

“We have now developed a strategic plan that will put these into action to have an impact on the lives of young people, their families and communities”.

YMCA Ireland also worked with the World YMCA to make sure that the mission is in line with Vision 2030, the agreed vision of the YMCA global movement.

The presence of Mr Sanvee at the gathering was an endorsement of the plan, which looks to the local, national and global work of the YMCA across the world and connecting young people across the island.

The World National Secretary also attended the AGM of YMCA Ireland in addition to workshops and activities with young people in Lurgan and Greenhill YMCA Newcastle.

Cathal McCann, a young leader from YMCA Newcastle wrote for the strategic plan.

“The YMCA has changed my life for the better, they supported me through the rain and helped me see the rainbow,” he said.

“YMCA are life changers and game changers for young people. I am excited for what the future holds for me in this amazing organisation.”

The World General Secretary said that the organisation is vital in an increasingly fragmented society.

“The world needs the YMCA more than ever,” said Mr Sanvee, adding: “Despite the threat of disconnection, YMCAs have connected and collaborated in unprecedented ways. We have adapted, connected and reset globally.

“Our vision, mission and goals have been co-created for greater global impact. Let’s step up, and into our future. Let’s allow young people to shape it. Now is the time for one vision. It’s time for our Vision 2030.”

NI Company Everun To Build £50m In Renewable Assets Creating 25 New Specialised Jobs

A renewable future is the only future for NI says local business

Northern Ireland renewables experts Everun are set to support investment in excess of £50m in wind and solar across the country over the next three years. The announcement comes as world leaders met at COP27 in Egypt last week.

Everun, which has been in operation since 2010, currently manages over £150m worth of renewable assets for clients across the Island of Ireland.

In the last year the company has invested over £2m bringing their workforce to 45 staff as well as significantly investing in high value stock, expanding their premises and wider infrastructure.

The company plans to invest a further £7.5m over the next three years to support the delivery of an additional £50m of renewable energy assets in Northern Ireland. That investment will also include creating a further 25 engineering and professional services jobs.

Managing director Michael Thompson said: “As part of our continued investment in developing energy generating wind and solar projects we are delighted to be able to play our part in delivering the Northern Ireland target of 80% renewable energy use by 2030 and to be in the position to create a further 25 highly specialised jobs within the sector.

“As a renewable energy management company that manages wind and solar renewable energy sources, EV charging, smart motor systems, and renewable switchover we recognise that we have a responsibility in the private sector to invest heavily in supporting the Northern Ireland Energy Strategy and Climate Change Bill.”

Mr Thompson says Northern Ireland as a whole has a long way to go to meet the 80% target. He added the potential to reach energy security is there but much work is still to be done by both government and the private sector.

“Northern Ireland has increased the amount of energy produced from renewables from near zero in 2010 to 45% this year,” he said.

“If Northern Ireland and the rest of the UK and Ireland are to meet the targets set, the production of energy must be supported with the right assets and technology, as well as investment in wider infrastructure by the Government.

“We have large energy-hungry businesses in manufacturing with a need for reliable energy sources, and bespoke software enables us to provide that reliability and cost efficiency from renewables.”

Already managing more than 160 wind turbines, on single sites and wind farms, as well as multiple solar installations, Everun are also celebrating their expansion into the Republic of Ireland market this year.

Mr Thompson said that Northern Ireland is at least four years behind the Republic of Ireland and the rest of the UK.

The Northern Ireland Climate Change Bill includes a Climate Action Plan to be published at the end of the year following Royal Assent in June.

“The rest of the UK and Republic of Ireland has been expanding renewable generation with a range of support mechanisms but Northern Ireland has lagged behind without a clear strategy from our Executive,” said Mr Thompson.

“That has consequences. Northern Ireland is being held back from an overall economic point of view due to the lack of investment in energy infrastructure and renewables.

“Our manufacturing sector is heavily reliant on huge energy usage, therefore the surging costs makes them less competitive leaving less profits for reinvestment.”

“We have to sort out issues such as planning and the electricity grid in order to achieve our targets which should include control of our own energy security. We should be ambitious enough to consider exporting power beyond NI, and then we can make our economy anything we want it to be.”

Mr Thompson added that with the right investment and determination the future can be exciting for the sector and the wider NI economy.

Huge Motorcycle Event Gearing Up For 2023 Return

February feast for motorsports fans at Lisburn’s Eikon Centre

Northern Ireland’s Motorcycle show returns for the first time in four years on February 4-5, 2023, at the Eikon Centre in Lisburn, hosted by 360 Events in what promises to be a packed weekend for fans of motorsport.

Planned as a curtain raiser for the start of the motorcycling season for the year ahead the show will attract fans of both on and off road competitions as well as bike enthusiasts across the country.

360 Events, a new group of motorcycling and motorsport enthusiasts and volunteers with many years’ experience as competitors and officials in all branches of the sport, are pleased to be re-launching the Northern Ireland Motorcycle Plus Show, according to Kenny Gardner of the organisation.

“We believe that after four years’ absence the public are ready for a winter Motorcycle Show once again to ‘launch’ their year in the great pastimes of motorcycling & motorsport, whether racing, touring or just enjoying riding bikes,” he said.

“The Motorcycle Plus Show is a great meeting place in the winter to plan your summer months ahead.

“We are delighted to be working with the Eikon Centre on our first show.

“Whilst we want to spice things up a little with the format, layouts and more, the end goal and delivery will remain the same in bringing the motorcycle and sport public together, create further interest for our motorcycle dealers, sporting clubs and anyone with a like-minded interest to what is a fantastic family pastime in whatever capacity its enjoyed.

“That is why we are calling the weekend the Northern Ireland Motorcycle Plus Show.”

Theresa Morrissey, Commercial and Financial Director at the Eikon Exhibition Centre said she was pleased 360 Events chose the venue.

She added: “The venue is delighted to welcome the Motorcycle Plus Show to our calendar of premier events for 2023.

“The Eikon Exhibition Centre, as Northern Ireland’s largest venue, is purpose-built for expos of this calibre and will provide 360 Events with the perfect home to grow their show.”

Mayor of Lisburn and Castlereagh City Council, Councillor Scott Carson, who attended the launch recently said:  “The presence of the Motorcycle Plus Show at the Eikon Centre in February 2023, is fantastic news for both the council area and my fellow motorcycle enthusiasts.

“The Eikon Centre is accessible from Dublin, Belfast and further afield. In Northern Ireland we have plenty of skilled motorcyclists who compete in road races, championships or motocross. There are also groups from across the region and further afield who participate in regular ride outs.

“We are all looking forward to seeing what the show will offer from motorcycle and rider equipment and merchandise to guest speakers. The council is delighted to have supported this event through its tourism grants as it will bring many people to the city area.”

Kenny, one of the organisers from 360 Events, explained the organisers are planning a packed weekend.

“Primarily, we will be using the show to showcase all forms of motorsport and motorcycling, if it has an engine and wheels, we intend it to be there,” he said.

Global Entrepreneurship Week UK to be celebrated with ground-breaking event

Northern Ireland’s first Enterprise Education conference will take place at the South Eastern Regional College (SERC) in Bangor on November 17 as part of the world-wide Global Entrepreneurship Week celebrations, bringing together entrepreneurs, enterprise educators, policy makers, and business supporters.

The Global Entrepreneurship Network UK, in partnership with Young Enterprise NI and the college, will host the free event designed to inspire a new generation of entrepreneurs across the country, share best practice and explore what the future of Enterprise Education in Northern Ireland could look like.

Katie Matthews-Furphy, Director of Global Entrepreneurship Week UK and Northern Ireland National Director for the Global Entrepreneurship Network, said the conference will also connect attendees to other parts of the country.

“We are very excited to be working with YENI and SERC to deliver Northern Ireland’s first, dedicated Enterprise Education Conference,” she said.

“We have a fantastic line-up of speakers and panellists, with a packed schedule and interesting content.

“The afternoon session will take a hybrid format, seeing us connecting in with satellite mini-conferences, in other locations across the UK and Europe.”

Among speakers will be Sharon Davies, CEO of Young Enterprise UK, Dr Emily Beaumont, President of Enterprise Educators UK, Dave Linton, Founder of Madlug, Carol Fitzsimons, Director of Young Enterprise Northern Ireland and Colin Jess, Chief Executive of Social Enterprise NI.

Minister for the Economy, Gordon Lyons, said “Global Entrepreneurship Week is an excellent opportunity to celebrate Northern Ireland’s commitment to developing entrepreneurship and our reputation for innovation”.

“Well-known past examples include the world-class innovation shown in our shipbuilding and linen industries, while today, Northern Ireland continues to innovate in sectors including cyber security, advanced manufacturing and financial technology (“fintech”).

“In line with the Department’s 10X Economic Vision for the region to embrace a decade of innovation, entrepreneurship is a key priority for Northern Ireland.

“We want to increase the number and ambition of enterprises driven by innovation, to support economic growth for all our people. Global Entrepreneurship Week will play an important role in helping to focus on the important role entrepreneurship has to play as we seek to realise the 10X Vision.”

GEN UK is part of the Global Entrepreneurship Network, a global movement active in over 200 countries, and Ken Webb, Principal of SERC said “the college is delighted to host the Future of Enterprise Education Conference at the college’s SPACE theatre” in Bangor.

By bringing together entrepreneurs, educators, ecosystem builders, policy makers, politicians, investors, and supporters, we can start to build a vibrant and impactful entrepreneurial ecosystem for our local and global communities,” he explained.

“We are looking forward to being part of the wider discussion on education and entrepreneurship, and how we can empower every individual to achieve their goals”.

Elaine Gold, Managing Director, GEN UK said the week of activities will mark a milestone for the initiative.

“2022 is the 15th Anniversary of Global Entrepreneurship Week, the world’s largest celebration of entrepreneurship.

“We look forward to meeting many entrepreneurs and supporters of the UK’s entrepreneurial ecosystem during the week.”
