‘It took me forty years to find this place and now I’m here, I wonder where the hell I’ve been looking all those years’.

When some artists are referred to as “legends” it is usually measured in years, or based on the quality of their music. Few are measured in both time and quality. One artist that has been judged by both is Iain Matthews.

Ian Matthews
As a founding member of Fairport Convention back in ’67, Matthews appeared on the bands’ first three recordings (Fairport Convention, What We did on our Holidays and Unhalfbricking) until musical differences caused him to leave in ’69 during the recording of their third album. It had become obvious to him that the group’s newfound traditional folk/rock direction would involve him far less than its previous contemporary work.

The next two years would yield three critically acclaimed releases for his new band, Matthews Southern Comfort. MSC provided the perfect vehicle for Matthews’ musical growth. Some thirty years later, MSC’s music continues to be held in high regard. The band went on to chart a #1 UK single with their version of Joni Mitchell’s “Woodstock”. At the pinnacle of the bands’ rise to stardom, Matthews found this overwhelming success to be fulfilling, but restricting. He quit the band to pursue a solo career, and to pursue his love of American country music.

The 70’s, were extremely productive for Matthews, releasing 10 more albums as both solo artists and member of the band Plainsong. 1970’s If You Saw Thro My Eyes would reunite him with his ex-Fairport mates, Richard Thompson and Sandy Denny. Matthews toured the US for the first time in support of this record, the band featuring Richard Thompson, guitarist Andy Roberts and bassist Bob Ronga. Five records followed in the middle of the decade, three with Elektra (including one with Plainsong) and two with Columbia. 1978 brought us Stealin’ Home, thought by some as Matthews’ finest effort of all time. Stealin’ Home also yielded the Top 10 US hit “Shake It”.

His loss of direction in the early eighties proved frustrating for Matthews, and he gave up making music, choosing rather to take up positions as A&R rep’s for Island Records and Windham Hill. In 1986, while appearing at the annual Fairport Convention reunion in England, Led Zeppelin,’s Robert Plant took him aside and impressed upon him the need to once again, rediscover that direction and give the fans a fresh dose of reinspired Matthews. The fire in his belly roared, giving him the mindset to jump back into it, proving yet again the old adage – you can’t keep a good man (dog) down. Case in point – 1988’s Walking A Changing Line, the critically acclaimed collection of Jules Shear compositions. Iain Matthews was back!

Having relocated to Austin Texas, 1990 kicked off the next chapter in Matthews’ career. Gold Castle released Pure & Crooked, which included the wonderful cover of Peter Gabriel’s “Mercy Street”. Group efforts followed. Soon came several releases from Plainsong and Hamilton Pool (w/Michael Fracasso). In 1994, Matthews signed with Austin label Watermelon, releasing The Dark Ride followed by God Looked Down (1996). While with Watermelon, he also produced Eric Taylor’s self-titled album.

In recent years, Iain has appeared on several high-profile releases, including What’s That I Hear – The Songs of Phil Ochs (performing “Flower Lady”), and Nanci Griffith’s Other Voices, Too (performing a duet w/Nancy on “Wall of Death” and providing guitar/backing vocals on “Who Knows Where The Time Goes”). He also toured the UK with Nanci in support of her record during the latter half of 1998. That same year saw the release of his highly acclaimed album Excerpts From Swine Lake.

Early spring 2000 saw Matthews back on European shores, temporarily rooting himself in the cosmopolitan city of Amsterdam, and bringing us what will most likely be considered his best recording to date A Tiniest Wham.

An introduction to Dutch singer/songwriter Ad Vanderveen resulted in an instant musical bond, with the pair deciding to join forces and work together for the immediate future. Throughout 2000 they toured Europe and together with California native Eliza Gilkyson they formed More Than a Song, a singer/songwriter project. The self-titled album was released in late 2001, followed by an extended European theatre tour in February 2002.

It was during the warm up dates for this tour that Matthews unexpectedly met and fell hopelessly in love with not one, but two southern belles, the beautiful Marly and her 2 year old daughter Madelief. Resulting in him taking his music and his heart to the small border town of Horst, in Limburg, or “Limbabwe” as he chooses to refer to it. “A year and a half in the big city was more than enough time for me to rediscover my Europeaness and dive headlong into it. Now I’m ready for the sticks again,” says Matthews.

Iain has been busier than ever since his move to Holland; a duet album with fellow artist Elliott Murphy, a tribute album to the late Sandy Denny. Both released on his own custom label Perfect Pitch.

With a four and a half year gap since his last solo album A tiniest wham, Matthews released his latest and possibly even better work than it’s predecessor, Zumbach’s coat in August 2004. With tours in Scandinavia, Germany, the UK, the USA and Holland, it was an exhausting, but exhilerating year and maybe the end of an era, of sorts. With his 60th birthday fast approaching, Matthews decided to call a halt to touring . But with the music still flowing through him, in September 2006, he began playing a select number of solo dates. Mostly in his adopted Netherlands and within driving distance of family and home.

2008 became a most special year for Iain in a very unexpected way. Another chapter of his writer series, Common Grounds took place in January, at The Beauforthuis, in Austerlitz. Iain’s guests were his old comrade Ad Vanderveen and a jazz combo, The Searing Quartet. As usual, it was policy for him to perform songs with each of his guests, but what transpired that night was beyond anyone’s expectations, setting a new musical tone for the rest of his already glittering career.

Iain and Egbert Derix, the leader and key composer for The Searing quartet, decided to try out jazz versions of two of his older Plainsong compositions, ‘Christoforo’s eyes’ and ‘Call the tune’ The resulting twenty minutes was both magical and hair raising. Something inexplicable and epocalyptical happened on stage, for both artist and audience. From here on, performing as he’s known it will never again be the same. Fast forward nine months and a revolutionary new album, Joy Mining by Iain Matthews & Searing Quartet, released in November 2009.
‘The best work I have ever done, without a doubt’ says Iain. ‘It took me forty years to find this place and now I’m here, I wonder where the hell I’ve been looking all those years’.
After a successful appearance on Dutch television this February, the quintet plan to dedicate the foreseeable future to playing live together and ‘just see where it takes us’.

All in all, I think it’s safe to say that Iain Matthews, microphone & guitar at the ready, passion in tact and eyes fixed steady on the horizon, is still moving forward and at the top of his game.

Settling in the south of Holland in 2002, he met and married his soul mate Marly. They have 2 children, Madelief, 8 and Luca, 3.

Belfast runs to raise money for Haiti Earthquake Fund.

belfast4haiti2Local runners and walkers will be taking to Ormeau Park, Belfast to raise money to help with the continuing aid effort in Haiti. The event, a 5 kilometre fun run will be taking place on Sunday 31st January 2010 starting from Ormeau Park at 11am. Organised in conjunction with ‘Befast 4 Haiti’, all proceeds will be donated to the Disasters Emergency Committee.

One of the poorest countries in the western hemisphere, Haiti suffered a massive earthquake, followed by several less powerful aftershocks in the last week. With over 72,000 reported dead, the lack of infrastructure and total devastation has led to a desperate need for international help. ‘Belfast 4 Haiti’ was set up in the aftermath of the earthquakes by local musicians wishing to help in any way they could. As a result, they have organised a day of gigs in Limelight, Katy Daly’s and Spring and Airbrake featuring over 50 bands. Again, all proceeds are going directly to the DEC.

The charity run is suitable for all ages and fitness levels, one of the organisers, Austin Tanney said “We want everyone to come down and walk or run. I’m expecting mums and dads pushing prams, toddlers and dog walkers. You don’t have to be an elite athlete to take part”. With many of the organisers getting involved through Twitter, it is a great example of the community spirit of the people of Northern Ireland as well as how social networking can be used to its best advantage.

Entry price: £10 per adult, £5 for under 16’s, £20 for families. Registration for the race will be online, race packs and numbers will be given out on the day from the Ozone Complex, Ormeau Embankment, Belfast.

Second Sight at the Alley

Sharon Neill
Sharon Neill

One of the best known psychic mediums in Britain, Sharon Neill, will be performing at Strabane’s Alley Theatre on January 29th. With an expected sell out audience expected to see her unique gift, tickets are being sold to patrons from across the North West, keen to see Sharon Neill share her unique gift.

Sharon has an incredible life story, losing her sight at birth, she has overcome tremendous hurdles in her life, which she recounts in her new autobiography, “Second Sight”.

Born 12 weeks early in July 1965, Sharon weighed only 2lb 11oz. Miraculously, and to the amazement of the doctors and her mother, she survived. However Sharon was soon placed in an incubator for six weeks, where her weight plummeted to 2lb 1oz and she suffered a reaction against the oxygen being pumped into the incubator. Unfortunately, the medical profession hadn’t yet understood that premature babies who needed to be given extra oxygen to help their lungs develop should be blind-folded during treatment, because the pure oxygen can be toxic to their immature eyes. As a result, her optic nerves were burnt in the incubator, leaving her permanently blind.

A traditional image is of a clairvoyant looking into her crystal ball – but Sharon ‘sees’ images ‘as if a scene from a film was being projected on to a screen in my mind’. “When I left college, I worked as a receptionist in the health service – using my psychic skills to help colleagues, friends and family – but as my skills improved, I quickly gained a local reputation as a medium. Everything changed in 1995 when I was approached by the BBC, who wanted to make a documentary about my involvement in the psychic world. “A Touch On The Blindside”, and the publicity and overwhelming response from the public it engendered, led me to devote myself full-time to being a medium and to start performing demonstrations in hotels across the country. I went on to appear on ITV’s This Morning, and at the Edinburgh Festival doing psychic readings.”

“When I was asked to participate in an Everyman documentary for the BBC, the film crew arranged for me to do a reading for a couple who refused to tell the director anything about themselves. When the pair were introduced to me, almost immediately a man of 21 or 22 came through, trying to communicate. I told them it was their son, who had passed away very suddenly – at which point the man broke down. I told them their son was saying he was sorry he didn’t have the chance to say goodbye. He went on to talk about the ring his father was wearing, music that was important to him, and say he was a cider drinker.” My purpose these days is to help people understand that life on earth is not the end – and that their loved ones who have passed on are, I believe, still watching over them.”

Tickets to see Sharon Neill at the Alley Theatre are £15 and are available from the Alley Box office on 028 7138 4444 or book online at www.alley-theatre.com. Patrons are advised tickets are limited and are advised to book as soon as possible.

Ireland Next Top Artist at the Alley!

Predicting who will make it in the art world isn’t easy, however Tom Climent, the celebrated Cork artist who is currently exhibiting at the Alley Theatre is always one name mentioned by leading Irish art cirtics.

tim 1His growing reputation has spread across Ireland over previous years and Strabane’s Alley Theatre and Art Gallery was delighted when Tom promised to open his new exhibition “Ashlar” at the award winning Alley. This is a major coup for Strabane’s Alley Theatre, which is receiving plaudits from all directions at present for the quality and success of their exhibitions, leading the way in the North West as the premier arts venue for people interested in the arts. His exhibition, entitled “Ashlar”, which runs from January 11th until February 5th, is consistant with his previous exhibitions, winning plaudits and praise wherever it shows.

tim 2Half-Irish, half-Spanish, his influences of Spanish and Italian art (both Baroque and Renaissance) on his stlye is obvious enough, heavily influenced by his chilldhood visits to Spain as a child. His major breakthrough came when he won the prestigious Victor Treacy Award in the late 90’s, from that his career has been rocketing through the art world. “Ashlar is based on the idea of sacred space embodied in the landscape all around us. Fascinating, abstract and dramatic, Tom Climent’s exhibition is not to be missed” commented Nathan Flatman from the Alley Theatre. “The exhibition is free to attend at the Alley, however if you want a sneak preview, check out the new Alley Theatre You Tube Channel at www.youtube.com/alleytheatrestrabane, where patrons can view a short video of his work or visit www.alley-theatre.com/exhibitions.”

Colin Murphy heads down to the Alley!

ColinMurphyhires1Probably best known for his appearance on RTE’S The Blizzard of Odd and The Panel and the BBC’s The Blame Game, top stand up Colin Murphy is set to perform at Strabane’s Alley Theatre on February 12th in front of an anticipated sell out audience.

Since he first started comedy in the late 90’s, Colin has performed over the world, from  New York, Boston, Montreal, Melbourne, Hong Kong, Prague, Brussels, Antwerp, Singapore, Paris, Milan and even Helsinki. His skills have not just been reserved to the stand up stage, as he also appeared in several films including “Road” by Jim Cartwright and the hit Irish comedy, “The Most Fertile Man in Ireland.”

So what kicked started Colin into comedy? “Well it wasn’t a eureka moment” stated Colin” It was more of an ‘oh f*ck’ moment! I had got a job working on the Kelly show on UTV writing sketches and performing them every week but then after three weeks I was sacked. So I basically just had to do it, I had to earn a living. So I just threw myself into it, I did Edinburgh all those places, I slept around England, playing in every kip. It beats working! I’ve had endless terrible jobs!” Since his Kelly Show job he has not looked back and is now seen as Ireland’s top stand up comedian, with a number of hit shows to his credit. “We are delighted Colin is set to return to the Alley for a great night of stand up on Feb 12th” commented Nathan Flatman from the Alley Theatre. “Looking at ticket sales I think his show must have been the number one present this Christmas in Strabane, as the show has only limited tickets left!” Tickets for the gig are only £16 and are available from the Alley Theatre Box office on 028 7138 4444 or by booking online at www.alley-theatre,com.

The Inn Castledawson Opens again for Business

Yesterday was a much anticipated girlie afternoon out with one of my best friends Emma McCann and she had booked the newly re-opened Inn, Castledawson. After lying dormant for almost a year now the reopening has been a most welcome event in this beautiful village set deep in the heart of Mid-Ulster but VERY easily accessible from the A6, mid way between Belfast and L/Derry.

We received a very warm welcome from the new Proprietors – Mrs. Paula Sturges and her daughter Gilly. Paula and Gilly are the owners of Eclipse Hospitality and have over 20 years experience in the catering and hospitality industry.  They have brought their executive head chef de cuisine  Trevor Hancock with them.  Trevor is a member of the British Culinary Federation and together with Chef Simon Jowett have cooked extensively worldwide and I am pleased to say are cooking with local produce.

It’s fair to say that the interior has been treated to a much needed face lift and they have worked wonders – it has been carefully brought up to date and is now a very warm and inviting venue with a touch of class.  We were instantly put at ease and were not disappointed by our meal.  Not being partial to garlic but very particial to a chicken ceasar salad the chef very kindly catered for my whimsical taste by making me my own dressing.
